What CUPS is
CUPS is the common Unix printing system on nearly every Linux host. The goal is not to install a driver for every model. It is the architecture: configure, queue, troubleshoot, and keep the old BSD commands working.
- The user submits a job. CUPS queues it and sends it to the right printer
- Four jobs: configure printers and policy, hold jobs in a queue, separate problems from logs, and offer legacy BSD commands
- It is a large package. Filters, drivers, and fonts arrive with it
Exam note
Weight 2. Mail transfer stayed in 108.3. CUPS is not a command that throws a file at a printer.
