Topic 109 · Networking Fundamentals
109.1 Fundamentals of internet protocols
Step 1 of 10 · weight 4
Why TCP/IP
Early topologies could not carry today's internet. What remains is the TCP/IP stack. The short name is still TCP/IP, but the stack also holds UDP, ICMP, and DNS.
- A ring dies if one cable breaks. A star needs too many cables. A bus stays in special systems. A mesh stays in Wi-Fi and some private networks
- IP answers how one device finds another. TCP answers how the data is delivered
- Postal picture: IP is the house address. TCP is the letter sent to that address
Exam note
Weight 4. The goal is not to design a network. Writing the address into Linux is the next lesson, 109.2.
